I'm off to Autodesk University again this year (2015).

Hope to see you there, if you see me please feel free to introduce yourself. I love meeting people who read my blog.... both of you....

If this is your first time at AU here are some tips.
  • Good luck requesting a Humidifier for your room... they're typically all gone by the time you remember. Just keep a glass of water by your bed at night.
  • Go outside at least once during the day, just to remind you what fresh air smells like.
  • Take a hand sanitizer.... germs are everywhere !!!!
  • Sleep, trust me you'll need it.. and I don't mean during sessions.
  • Dry air and carpet are a great combination to ZAP unwary bystanders.
  • Resist the urge to baa like a sheep during the line up at meal time... and if you do hear a sheep it's not me! ;-)
  • Wear comfortable shoes, your going to be on your feet all day and walking for miles (or kilometers)!
  • Meet as many people as you possibly can. This makes the AU experience more enjoyable and you can make some great contacts which you can meet next time you go. If you see me stop me and say hi. I'll give you a BIM Jedi decal (not approved by Disney).
  • It's Vegas, go down the Strip at night and also go see Fremont Street.
  • It's Vegas, enjoy yourself... but remember your there for a conference which you paid good money to attend, don't waste a day being hung over!
  • Make the event memorable... however don't be "that guy" that everyone remember for the wrong reasons.
  • Travel light. Your packing that c#@!p around with you all day... you really don't need your laptop!
  • Sit at a different table during meals and introduce yourself to everyone at the table. Take lots of business cards.... trust me you'll need LOTS!
Finally, enjoy yourself !.
It's a great opportunity to meet people. I learn the most after the sessions when I talk to people.

See you there!

AU Survival Tips

Shaan Hurley recently posted Autodesk University 2014 Survive and Thrive Tips

Here are a few of my own after going to AU... many times....
  • Good luck requesting a Humidifier for your room... they're typically all gone by the time you remember. Just keep a glass of water by your bed at night.
  • Go outside at least once during the day, just to remind you what fresh air smells like.
  • Take a hand sanitise.... germs are everywhere !!!!
  • Sleep, trust me you'll need it.. and I don't mean during your (my) sessions.
  • Shaan mentions "static electricity", this is a great opportunity to ZAP unwary bystanders.
  • Resist the urge to baa like a sheep during the line up at meal time... and if you do hear a sheep it's not me!
  • Wear comfortable shoes, your going to be on your feet all day and walking for miles!
  • Meet as many people as you possibly can. This makes the AU experience more enjoyable and you can make some great contacts which you can meet net time you go. If you see me stop me and say hi. I'll give you a Revit Jedi decal.
  • It's Vegas, go down the Strip and also go see Fremont Street.
Shaan suggests to take lots of business cards.... trust me you'll need LOTS!
Finally, enjoy yourself !.
It's a great opportunity to meet people. I learn the most after the sessions when I talk to people.

See you there!

Also don't forget to sign up for JJ's and my session.

Autodesk University 2014

Submissions for AU2014 class proposals are now open.

If you want to submit a class proposal for Autodesk University click on the link, log in using your Autodesk ID and fill out the relevant information.

I've submitted two sessions for AU2014, both topics relating to BIM Management... we'll see how these proposals go.

I've not had a lot of success with my previous submissions so far, so here's hoping that this years submissions are accepted. I believe there is an appetite for BIM Management sessions, at least that's been my experience with previous conferences I've attended recently, so here's hoping...

If not, I'll still be there... apparently the Expert Elite group will be having a meeting and we may get special EE shirts! :-)

See you there!

Autodesk Apps and Podcast

I was just searching for the Autodesk University App to download and came across a bunch of podcast I didn't know about!

There are podcast on the Autodesk Learning Channel on "Smoke" , Maya" and... 3Ds Max, that's the one I'm interested in...

If your using any of these programs check out what Autodesk Learning Center has to offer from the iTunes App Store, there's even a app for learning Revit!

Anyway... I found the app for Autodesk University. I used the one from last year and found it very helpful so I'm looking forward to using it again this year.

The AU app allows you to view event schedule, explore class schedule, find social events, it has a map, allows you to check into classes, share photos and comments as well as see what other people are doing and much much more.

If your going to AU check it out.

Autodesk University...a repeat of last year?

Ok, here is another RANT!!

Once again I was declined for my proposed session(s) at Autodesk University...
And yes even though I'm disappointed that my session wasn't accepted I understand why....simple numbers, 600 sessions 2000 + submissions!. What are the odds of not getting selected year after year??

BUT ! I take exception to the email I received from Autodesk telling me my session was declined.

We used several criteria when choosing speakers and topics - primarily conference experience, evaluations of presenters from past Autodesk University conferences, and proposed topics. Due to the large number of high quality proposals, we even had to disappoint some speakers who had excellent scores from previous AU conferences.

Selecting past presenters over and over and over again is making AU a little stale... correction... very stale.

I understand they want to guarantee that the speakers are good, but if you want to keep it fresh you've got to mix it up some, even if that means giving new speakers opportunities.
And speakers with unique topics... developing area's of how the software is being used as well as processes using multiple software... not to mention BIM Management !

Aghhh.... anyway, as I mentioned, I'm disappointed ..
Not sure how many more AU's I'll be attending, it's getting tough to find high level sessions... Which is why I really enjoy RTC...which unfortunately I wont be able to attend this year   :-(

So if you do want to attend a conference with unique sessions come and visit my at this years Central States Revit Workshop (CSRW) in August.

And if you cant make it to CSRW... we'll, I guess I'll see you at RTC in 2014 or at AU latter this year... but maybe not next year... unless my session get's accepted?!    ;-)

Hey YOU

Hey You! Are you going to AU?

Autodesk University deadline for the early bird discount runs out on the 15th.

If your not already registered... do it now!

Ok good, your back...

You wont regret it, it's a great event and well worth the time and $$, you'll associate yourself with like minded individuals and expose yourself to some real talented people..

Wait... that sounds weird! Especially since its in Vegas!

Ok... let me try again...

Attending the AU sessions will be of great benefit. Not only attending the sessions but the networking opportunities at the social events such as the beer bash and the Exhibition Hall.

Ok, its fun and you will be smarter when you leave!

Getting smarta every day.

AU Virtual 2011 - The Power of the Possible

If you are unable to attend Autodesk University this year you can sign up for Virtual AU....

This online event delivers on-demand technical classes on the newest releases of Autodesk products and the latest trends and challenges facing the design industry.

AU is a great event for keeping up to date on what's new with Autodesk software as well as networking, attending informative sessions, workshops etc...

Virtual AU is free for AU members. There are 250 classes in a variety of languages covering a wide range of topics.

I've been going to AU for over 5 years now and always bring back a ton of information that I refer too quite often. I also access the AU Archive library of past classes that are available on line as well, it's a great resource!

So if you cant attend AU in person sign up for Virtual AU.
Here is some info and a link to the web site:

AU Virtual is free to all AU members. Select from 250 classes in English, Spanish, and Portuguese on a wide range of topics. Plus you can network with other virtual attendees, watch key AU 2011 Las Vegas presentations and insider videos, and visit online exhibits—right from your desktop.

AU Virtual previews are scheduled for mid-November. Join us online November 15 for technical and certification preparation classes—especially helpful if you plan to take a free certification exam at AU in Las Vegas. Then join us online November 29–30 for AU Virtual 2011.
