Revit Super Model

For extremely large projects we have found that consolidating breaking the project up into the following categorizes:

So... What lives in the "Super Model"?

  • Sheets
  • Details
  • Detail Callouts
  • Legends
  • Duplicated Views (linked to parent views in the individual models)
  • Master (Amalgamated) Schedules
For clarification: The information contained in the schedules is kept in your individual model files, you have a “coordinating” schedule that you can add/change/input that information, but the schedules that will end up on sheets will live in the supermodel as a “master” thus bringing all the information from all three models together into one schedule.

So... What lives in the "Individual Models"?
  • All modeled elements, no modeled elements live in the “supermodel”.
  • All original views (Floor plans, RCP’s, Elevations) with dimensions, tags, annotations etc.
  • All original schedules, floor by floor window, door, finish schedules etc. These will be used as coordinating schedules.
  • Consultant links.
It is extremely important when reloading any links in the Super Model to only use “Reload From”  If a link is reloaded using the “Reload” option it will remove all the tags from any models directly linked into the "Super Model".

View Linking:
Create original view in the appropriate individual model.
Create duplicate views in the “supermodel”. Please be sure to name the view the same way as named in the individual model as well as its view hierarchy.
To “duplicate” an elevation view in the “supermodel”, create a detached copy of the model and copy the view from the detached model into the supermodel.
Apply appropriate “Placeholder” view template to the supermodel view. This will remove any unwanted modeled elements and annotations that we don’t want to appear in the view.
Once the template has been applied remove the template.  This will allow you to link “By Linked View.
Open your “View Visibility” window for the view in questions and go to the “Revit Links” tab. Select the “Display Settings” for the link in question
Under the “Basic” tab select “By linked view” use the pull down menu to locate the view you are trying to reference and select it.

          Detailing: From Detail View
          1)    Create detail view by placing a call-out around area needed to be detailed.
          2)    Use detail components to “draw” over top of the modeled components.
          3)    Once detailing is complete turn off all linked models.
